We need bold new solutions to help seniors gain economic independence in a world that now requires digital literacy in order to thrive. That is why we have launched our Senior Planet technology training program designed for older adults to strengthen their social and economic well-being.

COMPUTER BASICS – Starts June 2018. Registration is open! 

  • Computer experience prerequisite:  None.
  • This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience.
  • Learn how to use email, search the Internet and access information and connect to people who matter to you.
  • Locations: Citrix (click here for directions) and City of Tamarac Community Center (click here for directions). Coming soon: Center for Active Aging, Deerfield Beach.

  

BEYOND THE BASICS – Coming fall 2018. 

  • Computer experience prerequisite: Confidently experienced using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.
  • Learn about social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, and how to protect your personal information.

  

MONEY MATTERSComing spring 2019. 

  • Computer experience prerequisite: Confidently experienced navigating websites and searching for information on the internet.
  • Learn how to create smart financial habits to maximize your income, make a budget, do online price comparison, and leverage online resources to save money and earn extra income.

  

SOCIAL MEDIAComing spring 2019. 

  • Computer experience prerequisite: Intermediate level experience with navigating websites, using email and online protection of your information.
  • Learn how to access and engage in social media tools, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more.

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

  • All classes are designed for adults age 60+ and offered free of charge.
  • All classes meet twice a week and run for 10 weeks in the same location, providing 20 total computer classes in a course.
  • Classes are limited to the first 10 registrants.
  • Priority class enrollment for veterans and families of active military members at Citrix and City of Tamarac Community Center locations.
  • Equipment will be provided. Classes may be taught on a desktop computer or HP Chrome Book depending on availability. Chrome Books are excellent, affordable devices similar to a laptop which make access to the internet easy for older adults.
  • Courses will be offered at different locations throughout Broward and southern Palm Beach counties.
  • Courses will be added throughout the year.
  • All participants must commit to all 20 classes in the course. Only in emergency cases, make-up sessions may be available and/or re-entry into a future class.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Anyone aged 55+ and interested in volunteering as an instructor or classroom aide should also contact us. Senior Planet volunteer opportunities are available through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program with the South Florida Institute on Aging.

 

MORE TRAINING SITES NEEDED: Given the demand of these training opportunities, we're looking for partners to host our classes. Site locations are limited based on funding availability.
